ABERFELDY DISTRICT VICTORIA

About Aberfeldy

Aberfeldy, high in the mountains, is a small isolated town in Northern Gippsland (10km from the Goulbourn Valley). It's located on the eastern side of the Thomson Dam and Mount Baw Baw. It's 85km's from Moe, and 42km from Woods Point. Aberfeldy was initially known as Mount Lookout on which it is located but years later was renamed after the Scottish town bearing the same name. Aberfeldy is not to be confused with the suburb of Aberfeldie (near Essendon, Melbourne). Aberfeldy has no mains electricity, and consists mainly of holiday homes, as well as a telephone box.

1860: Aberfeldy was originally called Mount Lookout, mining equipment was unloaded at Port Albert and brought overland, through Heyfield, Seaton, Mount Useful, and then Mount Lookout (Aberfeldy), into the Jordan Valley. This was in the time period of 1860.

1861: John Donnelly who was carting goods to Jericho, took the wrong turning in the fog and dropped onto what is now known as Donnelly's Creek, here he discovered wonderful gold.

1862: Aberfeldy was a thriving town supplying mines along the Thomson River, and between Aberfeldy and Donnelly's Creek.

1872: The first Aberfeldy school (No.1224) opened and remained active for nearly 70 years.

1873: Toombon was established which was a satellite town, 7km's from Aberfeldy. The Toombon mine was the richest mine in the area. It produced 114,000 ounces of gold. At todays value, that is $188,100,000 worth of gold. Speculators sometimes talk of re-opening the Toombon mine, which closed at the start of WW1, but the task would be monumental.

1875: The Royal Mail Motel owned by the Svenson family received its licence.

1890's: It had a population of one thousand people. With, four hotels, post office, a telegraph office, a variety of shops, mining agents offices, a bank, school, police station, and of course, a cemetery. The Aberfeldy Cemetery was established in 1867 and gazetted. in 1877.

1914-1918: The gold rush ended for Aberfeldy at the start of the First World War, when soldiers went off to fight in the war. Cast-iron point is named as it is, due to mining equipment being dragged up that spur and crushed, as well as smelted, to make guns for the war effort. 15 men born in Aberfeldy went to the front.

1926/1939: Aberfeldy was decimated by bushfires.

1941: The Aberfeldy school finally closes. The last teacher was Ken Lewis.

1945-onwards: Since WW2 there have been efforts to revive mining in the Aberfeldy region, which includes both Woods Point and Walhalla. So far, no real success has eventuated from the efforts.

1983: The dam at the Thompson Reservoir, which holds 60% of Melbourne's water supply, was finally completed.

2023: The Loo With a View was officially opened. After a hugh effort by many of the locals and members of the ADA a toilet block on the old CFA block was built.

Nowadays, Aberfeldy is a quiet but beautiful town, with a rich past. With a few buildings, homes and places of interest .
